Kirsten and Scott--a husband and wife that are separated by jailhouse walls, as he is incarcerated despite his innocence. He is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. As a family of 4, and then 5, as the story unfolds, Scott and Kirsten knew the "good life." But God had a better one in store. They first had to be broken. They plumb new depths of their faith and in their knowledge of the Word in these days that some would consider dark, but that God infused with great joy. Throughout a total of 16 months of separation they wrote letters to each other that are filled with the stories that capture the depth of their love, family life, fear, questioning, and details of what God is doing in, around and through them. Many of the letters are laced with snaphots of jailhouse interactions in the maximum security unit where God still dwells. It is inspiring to see how the Holy Spirit moves throughout the whole situation when you see Scott’s letter next to Kirsten’s as the days go by. Prayers are being prayed and answered and it is all recorded in the daily wrap-up. It is a God story. It is a love story. And the letters are delivered daily. Good Morning/Afternoon Sweetheart,

This has been one of those atypical days.  When I got back from serving breakfast Jonathan was still up.  So we talked for a bit.  Then as we were falling back to sleep the Dep came in to pass out mail.  He would drop the mail on the floor than kick it under the cell door.  Needless to say, he kicked the door more than he did the mail.  No big deal, though, at least we got our mail.  Then shortly after than a group of Deps came running and shouting into the unit to shake down “B” tank.  It was right next door to us so we hear commotion non-stop.  We were supposed to exchange our “whites” today, but due to the morning’s events that has not happened yet.

I did manage to get two clergy visits this morning.  Pastor Doug came by first and then 10 minutes later Pastor Jim showed up.  Both pastors continue to have us at the forefront of their minds and pray for us daily.  I shared with Doug the miracle of trnaformation that God is working in Jonathan’s life.  It is a work in progress, that is for sure, but I guess we all are.  I got to share with Jim about our anniversary and the extended visit we enjoyed.  I could see the pain on his face as I know he tried to ponder that it would be like to be in our shoes.  Hopefully God will use the to further strengthen their marriage relationship.  It was neat to talk to him about that sort of stuff though, like two friends caring for each other.  He is a good man.  I’m thankful to God for both of their presences in our lives.

I received two letters from my incredible wife.  Cute invitation to the party.  Charlie and Shirley are neat people, and they love us very much.  It was good of them to do this for us, and what a great response from those who attended.  God is working and we are loved.  I also receive the thank you card with the pattern from our bedroom.  I just sat and stared at it, picturing our bedroom in such vivid detail.  What a treat!  It also brought back memories of decorating the bedroom and putting the slipcover over that chair.  You also mentioned that you are starting to decorate for Christmas.  Yea!  I am really going to miss Christmas at the red house!  I was so looking forward to it.  Next year though.  We’ll make some great memories there in the years to come.  Send pictures of the decorations, I can’t wait to see how it lookl fully decorated for the holidays.  The home just lends itself perfectly for it.

I’ll write more later sweetgirl.  I am so thankful for you, and our life together.

I love you, Scott
