Kirsten and Scott--a husband and wife that are separated by jailhouse walls, as he is incarcerated despite his innocence. He is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. As a family of 4, and then 5, as the story unfolds, Scott and Kirsten knew the "good life." But God had a better one in store. They first had to be broken. They plumb new depths of their faith and in their knowledge of the Word in these days that some would consider dark, but that God infused with great joy. Throughout a total of 16 months of separation they wrote letters to each other that are filled with the stories that capture the depth of their love, family life, fear, questioning, and details of what God is doing in, around and through them. Many of the letters are laced with snaphots of jailhouse interactions in the maximum security unit where God still dwells. It is inspiring to see how the Holy Spirit moves throughout the whole situation when you see Scott’s letter next to Kirsten’s as the days go by. Prayers are being prayed and answered and it is all recorded in the daily wrap-up. It is a God story. It is a love story. And the letters are delivered daily. Hi Sweetheart,

We were locked down from dinner on last night.  They informed around 9 PM that the whole facility was on lockdown.  We were then called out to the bubble to pick up our mail.  I didn’t get to talk with you, but I did get to read your words.

I received 2 letters from you.  One was on your monogrammed cards with the pretty blue stationary inside.  It was dated 12/1 and talked about your evening at the H2H party.  Reading the list of gifts touched my heart, there are a lot of people that love us.  It is another neat example of God’s faithful provision, and through the work of His people.  Thank you for sharing that with me.  It’s great to hear who is involved and showing support, sometimes the names surprise us.  Again, God using His people, and sometimes people we would have never guessed, to rise up and respond to His call.  What a gift to be able to witness it.

The other card I received has 2 cards in it.  Yea!  The one from Barbi, Miles and Maya and the one from Andre.  Andre’s words touched me.  I appreciate him taking the time to extend a hand of encouragement and hope.  I also appreciate his kind words regarding me.  Neat card from Barbi and the gang.  The verse inside is such an encouragement.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way, walk in it.”  Isaiah 30:21

Your monogrammed card is the one that I will hold onto and read over and over again.  When you tell me that you are proud to have my last name, any fears or troubles that the world brings my way subside.  I love to hear you tell me that you love me.  A person can never hear that too much.  Words of encouragement mean more to me coming from you than anyone else.  I need and crave that support.  Thank you for always providing that.  You tell me to keep my eyes focused up and on His many blessings that have been showered upon us.  That is something I do often–partly because he is so faithful to provide.  You are right, God is so good.  I praise Him daily for blessing me with a wife and friend as wonderful as you.  My love grows deeper with every day, with every letter, and with every call.  You make me want to strive to be the best husband, father and friend that I can possibly be.  Thank you for the gift of your love.  You are an amazing woman!

Your adoring husband, Scott
