Kirsten and Scott--a husband and wife that are separated by jailhouse walls, as he is incarcerated despite his innocence. He is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. As a family of 4, and then 5, as the story unfolds, Scott and Kirsten knew the "good life." But God had a better one in store. They first had to be broken. They plumb new depths of their faith and in their knowledge of the Word in these days that some would consider dark, but that God infused with great joy. Throughout a total of 16 months of separation they wrote letters to each other that are filled with the stories that capture the depth of their love, family life, fear, questioning, and details of what God is doing in, around and through them. Many of the letters are laced with snaphots of jailhouse interactions in the maximum security unit where God still dwells. It is inspiring to see how the Holy Spirit moves throughout the whole situation when you see Scott’s letter next to Kirsten’s as the days go by. Prayers are being prayed and answered and it is all recorded in the daily wrap-up. It is a God story. It is a love story. And the letters are delivered daily. november 1st – inside/out

by Kirst on October 7, 2009

Hi Sweetheart,

It has been a long day.  But I’m sure yours has been equally as long.  I hope Kayti and Ryan have allowed you some rest.  I got back from court early this afternoon and tried to lay down and get some rest.  I managed to get a little sleep despite the constant interruptions.

I just got back from my visit with John.  We spent probably 45 minutes together.  It was nice to hear his perspective on the day’s events.  And I really appreciate the fact that he was able to call and give you a detailed accounting.  John is good at weeding through the fluff and figuring out what is going on behind the scenes.  We also talked about the issue of support at the prelim and about the church being visibly present.  My response, as a husband, is that I want you to be surrounded by a group of supporters that will show you love.  John, once again, is very good at watching out for us and being sensitive to our needs.  I am so thankful that the Lord led us to be a part of Mid-City.  His infinite wisdom and grace in action.

Good to talk with you tonight.  Again, I hope you get the sleep you need.  Since the time change, your mornings have started so early.  I am curious to hear about Kayti’s travels tomorrow morning, with the door being cracked open tonight.  And poor little Buddy falling off our bed.  He is so cute.  He falls all the way to the floor and then remains asleep.  He may have even woken up briefly and then moved around a little to get comfy and go back to sleep.  He is such a good little guy.  The guys in here are still talking about him and his costume.  I can’t wait to see pictures of both Kayti and Ryan in their costimes.  Yea!

Another story.  I received several books the other day.  One was The Bible Promise Book, which Jonathan took a liking to.  He really liked being able to reference specific Scripture on topics without getting overwhelmed or lost in the Bible.  Well, knowing that this one was mine, he put in a chaplain’s request to receive a copy of his own.  When it arrived, he started thumbing through it and Ray walked up.  Ray showed a lot of interest in it.  Seeing this, Jonathan started showing Ray how the book was laid out and the way Scriptures were by category.  He then told Ray he would like to write an inscription on the inside cover for when Ray takes the book to the Penn.  Jonathan and I both wrote a little something and presented it to Ray tonight.  Ray hasn’t read the inscriptions yet, but accepted the book gladly.  I look forward to talking with him in the morning.
