Kirsten and Scott--a husband and wife that are separated by jailhouse walls, as he is incarcerated despite his innocence. He is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. As a family of 4, and then 5, as the story unfolds, Scott and Kirsten knew the "good life." But God had a better one in store. They first had to be broken. They plumb new depths of their faith and in their knowledge of the Word in these days that some would consider dark, but that God infused with great joy. Throughout a total of 16 months of separation they wrote letters to each other that are filled with the stories that capture the depth of their love, family life, fear, questioning, and details of what God is doing in, around and through them. Many of the letters are laced with snaphots of jailhouse interactions in the maximum security unit where God still dwells. It is inspiring to see how the Holy Spirit moves throughout the whole situation when you see Scott’s letter next to Kirsten’s as the days go by. Prayers are being prayed and answered and it is all recorded in the daily wrap-up. It is a God story. It is a love story. And the letters are delivered daily. take 2: october 13th – inside/out

Hi Sweetheart,

It’s just before dinner on Wednesday evening.  We had outside rec this afternoon and by this time I’m pretty hungry.  It’s supposed to be burritos tonight but we’ll see.  I learned a very important lesson–expect the unexpected.  This place is truly one of a kind.

Had a good talk with my friend Carlos from the Bible Study.  Oh, and before I forget, we have a new guy who joined the Bible Study.  We are a transitory group, but we always manage to have around 8 attending.  Anyway, back to Carlos.  His case has been weighing on his mind recently and God is speaking to his heart.  Without going into it further, he mentioned that he feels God convicting him and directing him to take some bold steps.  I prayed with him and encouraged him to continue to pray that God would clearly reveal the steps he should take and for an anointing of courage and strength to follow that directing.  I try to be real careful not to know the intimate details of people’s cases and when they come to me for advice that I point them right in the direction of God.  I will most assuredly be a sympathetic ear, but the true wisdom and understanding comes from the Lord, and Him alone.

Well, this is your long day, or should I more accurately say, your extra-long day.  For I suppose that all of your days are long taking care of three kids and working.  You amaze me!  I pray that through these tough days, God gives you moments of peace and grants you times of rest.  And that during the hurried pace of the day, he allows you to experience the pure joy of being around the kids rather than the constant drain.  You have shared funny stories and examples of how God is doing this and I pray that He continues to do so, hour by hour, minute by minute.  Rest in Him, my love, for He is faithful!

Need to get this in the mail.  Please be assured of my deep love for you.  Kiss the little ones for me.

I love you, Scott
