Kirsten and Scott--a husband and wife that are separated by jailhouse walls, as he is incarcerated despite his innocence. He is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. As a family of 4, and then 5, as the story unfolds, Scott and Kirsten knew the "good life." But God had a better one in store. They first had to be broken. They plumb new depths of their faith and in their knowledge of the Word in these days that some would consider dark, but that God infused with great joy. Throughout a total of 16 months of separation they wrote letters to each other that are filled with the stories that capture the depth of their love, family life, fear, questioning, and details of what God is doing in, around and through them. Many of the letters are laced with snaphots of jailhouse interactions in the maximum security unit where God still dwells. It is inspiring to see how the Holy Spirit moves throughout the whole situation when you see Scott’s letter next to Kirsten’s as the days go by. Prayers are being prayed and answered and it is all recorded in the daily wrap-up. It is a God story. It is a love story. And the letters are delivered daily. take 2: september 25th and 26th – inside/out

by Kirst on January 27, 2010

Hi Sweetheart,

It’s just before dinner on Saturday night and we’re back in our cells.  I talked to your mom and dad earlier trying to reach you.  They mentioned you guys had gone to the Wrights, so I called over there.  Missed you again.  I spoke with John for awhile and we had a good conversation.  Hopefully I will be able to call you tonight.

John Suchy came to visit today.  It was nice of him to take time out on a Saturday and come by.  He is an interesting guy.  He’s definitely an engineer.  Very measured.  I brought him up to speed on what has been going on in here and about the Bible Study.  I think he is even going to send in a study guide, perhaps The Purpose Driven Life.  He asked about what I needed, curious if I could receive CDs or tapes.  I laughed and went into further detail regarding the accommodations and rules.  It was a nice visit and seemed to go by fast.

It was an interesting night last night.  Right after dinner, as we were making our way back to our cells, and altercation ensued between two of the blacks, one of which is a friend of mine.  The Dep saw it immediately and came in to break it up.  When his verbal warnings did not stop the mele, his can of pepper spray did.  That stuff wafter all over our tank, everyone was coughing.  It is amazing how potent that stuff really is.  They brought fans in to air out the place and within an hour or two it was back to normal.  It was quite an ordeal, but just another experience here at the beautiful dentention center.

My parents came last night.  I felt bad that I was coughing during the visit but they understood.  They looked tired, more so for my dad, but in good spirits.  Man, are they truly excited about having the kids tomorrow.  My mom told me about all of the fun things they are going to do.  I’m glad they get this time with them.

In talking with your dad today, he brought me up to speed on the day’s events.  He is really growing close to Sam and Mattie.  They are a lot of work, but Dad seems to enjoy them.  He relayed a couple of stories that had me laughing.  Sam’s “Houdini” acts crack me up, he must not like being collarred.  Dad also said that Sam is bigger than Mattie, which is interesting considering how dominant she used to be over the food bowl.  He mentioned that he and Buddy handled lawn care again.  It’s neat to hear about the time the two of them are spending together.  Buddy needs that.

Your mom jumped on the phone for a minute specifically to tell me about you.  She is so proud of you!  She was in tears, but the message was clear–her deep love and respect for the woman that you are.  I, too, have to echo her sentiment.  You are an amazing woman…and guess what.  I love you!

It was great to see you today.  Mals hair is classic, a real attention getter.  When I walked up the stairs to the phones I could see other people waiting for visits checking her out.  She is such a little sweetheart.  I was able to catch her gaze a couple of times, what a treat for me.  Thank you.

You were looking especially beautiful today also.  I spent the rest of the afternoon thinking to myself, “Man, is she pretty!”  It was nice to be able to talk with you the whole time.  Seeing the kds is great too, but having time with just you is very special.  The time just goes way to fast and unfortunately, for now, I am not a chow server.  It was relaxing knowing that we didn’t have to rush our thoughts or our conversation.  We’ll keep praying about it though.

I’ll write more in the morning.  I want to get this in the mail drop off tonight.  I love you sweetgirl and I am praying that you trip back to San Diego was quiet and uneventful.  Talk with you soon.

Love, Scott
