Kirsten and Scott--a husband and wife that are separated by jailhouse walls, as he is incarcerated despite his innocence. He is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. As a family of 4, and then 5, as the story unfolds, Scott and Kirsten knew the "good life." But God had a better one in store. They first had to be broken. They plumb new depths of their faith and in their knowledge of the Word in these days that some would consider dark, but that God infused with great joy. Throughout a total of 16 months of separation they wrote letters to each other that are filled with the stories that capture the depth of their love, family life, fear, questioning, and details of what God is doing in, around and through them. Many of the letters are laced with snaphots of jailhouse interactions in the maximum security unit where God still dwells. It is inspiring to see how the Holy Spirit moves throughout the whole situation when you see Scott’s letter next to Kirsten’s as the days go by. Prayers are being prayed and answered and it is all recorded in the daily wrap-up. It is a God story. It is a love story. And the letters are delivered daily. letter to our kids – inside/out

by Kirst on August 22, 2009

This letter is from Scott’s cellie who was incarcerated for weapons of mass destruction.  Scott and Phillip talked a lot and Phillip even read some Christian material.

As he was preparing to be released, Scott encouraged him to go home and be the single dad his kids needed him to be.  He wrote this letter to our kids before he left.

Dear little ones Kaytlin and Ryan,

My name is Phillip S.  I am currently a rommate of your daddy’s. I’m currenly there but am leaving October 18th.

First off let me tell you that me and your daddy talk every night about you guys and your mommy too.  Kaytlin and Ryan your daddy loves you very much.  His face glows whenever we speak about you children.  Your father has made it plain and clear that his family is his life.

But let me tell you this about your father.  I honestly have never met a man of such high caliber before.  Your father is above reproach, he is truthful, sincere, honest, thoughtful of others.  I can say hosestly he is a man among men.

Little ones your daddy is a ray of hope to many who have no hope.  I have never met a man who gave so much of himself, selflessly and without asking anything in return.

90% of the men here grew up without a father or no positive role model in their life.  Your father has bridged that gap for many without even knowing it himself.

And don’t you worry because I know he’ll be coming home soon.  I’m very fortunate to have him as a roommate, and I’m honored to call him a friend.

My sincere best wishes for you children and your mommy and Daddy!  Your pal always Scott.
